Two open heart surgeries: a first for First Cardiology, Lagos

Two open heart surgeries: a first for First Cardiology, Lagos

A new milestone has been recorded in the annals of First Cardiology Consultants(FCC) Hospital Ikoyi Lagos. The first two open heart surgeries have just been successfully carried out at the hospital.
The first patient had become incapacitated with fatigue and shortness of breath for several months. Investigations showed that he was born with a hole in the heart. The surgery entailed removing a patch from the front of his heart and then it was sewed to cover the hole after completely stopping the heart, and temporarily transferring the functions of the heart to a heart-lung machine. The heart was subsequently restarted after the repair and patient is recovering well.
The second patient has blocked heart arteries which caused damage to the heart muscle and caused him chest pain even when carrying out minimal activity like walking a few steps. Tests performed also at FCC showed blocked heart arteries in several places. Again, the heart was stopped (arrested), blood diverted to heart – lung machine and new blood vessel taken from his thigh and was used to jump the blocked areas (bypass).
The surgeries were carried out by a team led by a world renowned Heart surgeon Dr “Mr” O C Nzewi from Belfast Ireland. Dr Nzewi and his team used FCC’s newly opened, dedicated Operating Facility and ICU unit.
The heart surgery program is intended to amongstother things reduce the cost of carrying out such advanced heart operations abroad with the attendant costs in foreign exchange.

Strange illness kills 50 children in Jigawa State

Strange illness kills 50 children in Jigawa State

A strange illness has killed 50 children, while 40 others were hospitalized in Gidan Dugus village of Wangara district, Dutse Local Government of Jigawa State.

According to reports, the children under the age of five, are dying on a daily basis as a result of high fever, stomach upset, vomiting, diarrhoea and shortage of blood. Parents of the deceased children are mourning the death of their loved ones, while those whose children were affected are living in fear due to their worsening health condition.

A parents who lost his seven children to the strange illness, Haladu Usman, said:  “Within 14 days, I lost seven of my children, three males, and four female. The children, aged between three and one and infant, died one after the other, I lost three in a day.”

Another parent, Salisu Abdullahi, said he lost four of his children in one week, despite several efforts made to secure medication from nearby clinics. “I was scared by this unknown sickness which consumed the lives of innocent children of this community,” he said.

The ward head of Gidan Dugus, Mallam Umar Dashiru, said what had happened was alarming and pathetic, saying that the community now lives in fear and agony of seeing its children die in numbers. He explained that they reported the case to the state government which sent a team of medical personnel to take blood samples of some children for test, adding that results of the test were being awaited

"We lack drugs in the state house clinic because of the high number of people coming in for consultation" perm sec to the state house, Jala Arabi, says

"We lack drugs in the state house clinic because of the high number of people coming in for consultation" perm sec to the state house, Jala Arabi, says

The permanent secretary in the Ministry of Health, Jala Arabi, has attributed the lack of drugs at the state house clinic to the large number of patients that come in for treatment at the medical facility.

Recall that on September 9th, Mrs Aisha Buhari, had called for a probe into the management of the budget of the state house clinic after she discovered that the clinic lacked basic medical items such as drugs, syringes, and others. Read here.

The House of Representatives had set up a panel of inquiry to investigate the poor state of the clinic. In a report submitted to the panel, the state house permanent secretary alleged that the large number of patients that visit the hospital resulted in the depletion of drugs at the medical facility.
Part of the report read: “The State House reached an agreement with HMOs with regard to the remittance of all NHIS payments in respect of State House Staff whose NHIS point is the State House Medical Centre.  It is instructive, however to note that whereas almost 80% of the personnel serving in the State House access medical services at the State House Medical Centre, only about 20% of them selected the medical Centre as their NHIS point. The implication of the foregoing is that, whereas they access free medical services at the Centre, their respective NHIS contributions go to those medical facilities they selected as their providers, even though they do not go there for any medical service. This explains the quick depletion of the drugs and other consumables due to the very high number of patients being attached.”
The members expressed concern over the report presented by Arabi that out of 329 personnel working in the State House Clinic, 47 non-core medical personnel for several years illegally collected call-duty allowances. According to him, some doctors sponsored by the State House on Residency Programmes (usually 2 years), got their call duty allowances paid “even though they are no longer performing call duties at the Medical Centre.”
The report added “Sadly, some of them were discovered to have spent close to 7 years doing residency, with many changing institutions, as they fail to qualify. In view of the fact that paying doctors on sponsored Training programmed call duty allowance was considered unearned allowances. IPPIS (OAGF) was advised to cease paying them such allowances pending their return to duty from training. This has, however, become controversial and we are reviewing with the assistance of the Federal Ministry of Health who are guiding us appropriately,” Arabi said.
He said despite their failure to enlist on the State House Clinic’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), 80% of the State House workers and their spouses are enjoying free medical services, at the expense of the government.
Minister of State for Health, Osagie Ehanire, told the panel that the state house clinic is not directly under the supervision of the Ministry of Health
“The State House Clinic is not directly under my ministry. I don’t know who is directly in-charge. I didn’t say that it is not under anybody, may be under the FCT. It is not unusual that the clinic is not under the ministry, this is also applicable in some states. This is what we met on ground. I am not aware of the status of the training of the doctors practicing in the clinic. The choice of who heads the clinic lies on the President. It is the prerogative of the President.”

She pointed out that the state government had, long before now, shown serious concern over the outbreak of the virus in other parts of the country, and that was why it embarked on serious sensitisation campaigns on how to people can guide against contacting.
The Commissioner appealed to anyone who sees and suspects Monkey Pox to immediately report same to the nearest medical facility for prompt action and advised the people to abstain from consumption of any form of Bush meat, particularly monkey, rat, squirrel, stressing that they should also reduce handshake as these preventive measures would go a long way in preventing it’s spread.

HEALTH: Nigerian Professor Invents New HIV Drug, Treats 500

A researcher, Prof. Madubuike Ezeibe, has called on Federal Government to carry out a clinical trial of the drug he invented for the treatment of HIV/AIDS, Aluminum-Magnesium Silicate.

A clinical trial is a study that explores whether a medical strategy, treatment, or device is safe and effective for humans. It shows which approaches work best for certain illnesses or groups of people.

Ezeibe, a professor of Veterinary Medicine, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, made the call in Umuahia on Monday.

The don who presented a paper on the potential of the drug as both antiviral and raw material, at a world conference on Ethnopharmacology in Chicago, United States, on May 2, 2016, said that more than one year after he invented and presented his findings at different international conferences, no authority anywhere in the world had disputed the research findings.

“I, therefore, appeal to the federal government to institute an inter-ministerial committee to carry out clinical trial of the drug in six centres across the country without further delay.

“The committee should comprise federal Ministries of Health, Education, Environment as well as Science and Technology, with, at least, 1000 sample patients from each state of the federation.

“Some of the findings of the research include that silicates have molecules that are 0.96 nanometre in size while HIV has molecules as big...See more @ NewsInNigeria.org

Chude Jideonwo reveals his battle with hypertension, benign prostrate hyperplasia, irritable bowel syndrome and others

Chude Jideonwo reveals his battle with hypertension, benign prostrate hyperplasia, irritable bowel syndrome and others

In a post he shared on his IG page, award-winning media executive, Chude Jideonwo, disclosed his battle with a number of illnesses. According to him, he was diagnosed with Hypertension when he was just 19. Hope he gets totally well soon. Read what he wrote below...
Let me come out of the closet... just a little:)
I was diagnosed of High Blood Pressure when I was 19 - that’s 14 years ago.
Yup, you heard it right. My doctor was just as shocked.
All through that period, I have been diagnosed, dealt with and undergone surgeries for high blood pressure, irritable bowel syndrome, benign prostrate hyperplasia, back pain, migraine and Tourette’s Syndrome, with movement disorder and OCD co-morbidities.
Going full throttle right after high school, driven by fear and pressure, will do that to you.
And I, my fantastic mother (ah, where do I begin?), with Adebola close by as well as my best friend F, have faced these challenges head on.
When I say nothing human is alien to me - I mean it. I know what I am talking about.
Out of all these things, God has healed me of three this year. He promised me last year, and he has been delivering. Doctor-confirmed. Kasa!
But I often wonder why God made me go through (and I'm still going through some of) these. Well, early this year one of my favourite Communication Associates at RED (I recruited them all personally, love ‘em!) asked me why God would allow her face illnesses that she certainly doesn’t deserve.
Throughout this year, I have wondered constantly: is this why God made me go through some of these fires? And to ensure I found joy IN SPITE of these fires, before he started to heal me one by one? So I can answer her questions? So I have a sense of what it really means to be there? So I can help people find the path that I was helped to find?
If it is, then dang! What a God.
What a gaddem fascinating God.

'No case of Monkeypox virus in Lagos' Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, says

Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, says all the Monkey Pox samples obtained from Lagos and subjected to laboratory examination tested negative. Adewole broke the news at a press conference in Abuja today. According to him, three cases of the viral disease have been confirmed in Bayelsa.
“As of October 13, 2017, there were 17 SUSPECTED cases reported from Yenagoa LGA in Bayelsa State. We have received laboratory confirmation for Monkeypox virus from three of these cases from the WHO Regional Laboratory in Dakar, Senegal. Samples from 12 other cases from Bayelsa were negative. With these results, four suspected Monkeypox outbreak in Yenagoa have been confirmed with laboratory evidence. The most likely source of infection is a primary zoonotic transmission, from an animal, with a secondary person-to-person transmission.
“Since our initial announcement, a total of 43 other suspected cases have been reported from eight other states namely Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ekiti, Lagos, Enugu, Nasarawa, Rivers, and FCT. Of these, four cases from Lagos have also been tested and confirmed to be negative for the Monkeypox virus. We expect that many of these cases being reported from other states in Nigeria are not caused by the Monkeypox virus, but we will continue to investigate all those cases that fit the case definition. Further laboratory tests using whole genome sequencing are being carried out by the Africa Centre for Genomics and Infectious Diseases in Redeemers University Ede, Ogun State.” he said

#Health : Ondo State First Lady, Betty Shares Touching Story On How She Survived Breast Cancer 20 Years Ago....Full Story Here 👇

Founder of Breast Cancer Symposium of the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria, BRECAN and First Lady of Ondo State, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, in an interview with Vanguard, narrated how she survived breast cancer 20 years ago.

Here’s her story;

‘I survived breast cancer about 20 years ago. It all started in 1997 when I was diagnosed. Before then, I didn’t know anyone who had that experience and the little information I got was from the international media. On that fateful morning when I felt something in my breast, of course, my mind raced to breast cancer because it was where such a disease was located.

I was scared and didn’t know what to do; it happened when I was resting at home during my annual leave. It got me thinking that if this happened to be breast cancer, what was I going to do at that age? I was 42 or 43 and I had little children. What would become of those children? I kept the discovery to myself for almost one week’.

She continued to say, ‘my baby was just four years’ old or thereabouts. So, I just tuned to television that morning and what I heard was that ‘this programme could save your life’.

Immediately I heard that, I raised my head from the pillow, sat and began to wonder, what could this be? And it happened to be about breast cancer survival journey. That coincidence saved my life. There was this woman and it was her journey through breast cancer diagnosis, and she happened to be the mother of a popular Hollywood actor.

She went through the treatment and, as a survivor, was sharing her experience. She used her journey to lift the spirit of those undergoing such experience and I benefitted from it.

That was how I summoned the courage to go to hospital, and said that ‘whatever this woman did, I am going to be like her’.

‘After the examination, the doctor confirmed there was a lump, but he didn’t know what it was.

When I told my husband, he was scared but he didn’t know I had been fortified by that television programme I had watched. He must have wondered where I got the strength because I was on my feet and prepared that whatever that woman did, I was going to do and overcome.

Then my treatment commenced. The first treatment was mastectomy. At the said time (1997), the level of breast health care was at the rudimentary level. Radical mastectomy meant ‘just remove everything (breasts)’ and I said ‘remove the damn thing if that is what will make me live’.

My experience was one of shattering loneliness, unavailability of information and group support, coupled with the tight- lip syndrome and indifference surrounding the disease’ she said.
