Sports : Cristiano Ronaldo Beats Rival Lionel Messi To Win 2017 Golden Balon D'or Award, Becoming His 5th Win (Photos Here )

Cristiano Ronaldo has said he hopes “the battle with LionelMessi continues”, after he equalled the Argentine’s recordoffive Ballon d’Or awards on Thursday night.

Ronaldo had previously won the award in 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2016 respectively.

Speaking shortly after he was announced winner, the Real Madrid forward said, “I feel very happy, it’s a fantastic moment in my career, I’ve been waiting for this for a long time.

“This year has been great, we won the Champions League and LaLiga and, on a personal level, I was a top scorer in the Champions League.

‘Trophies help win these awards and we have to thank my colleagues from Madrid and Portugal, it was very important for me.

“I hope to play at this level for a few more years, I hope the battle with Messi continues, things happen for a reason.

“I feel good this season and we’ll see what we win at the end of the year.

“Neymar has a lot of talent, a lot of potential, and I’m sure he’ll have some chance to win in the future,” he said.

Cristiano Ronaldo has beaten Lionel Messi to the 2017 Ballon d'Or off the back of Real Madrid's La Liga and Champions League double.

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has gone level with Lionel Messi on five Ballon d'Or awards.

The Portuguese forward enjoyed another stellar season at the Bernabeu in 2016/17, netting 42 goals in 46 appearances in all competitions.

And his form was integral to Zinedine Zidane's side securing glory in La Liga and the Champions League, their second successive success in Europe.

Ronaldo has tonight seen his performances for Real in 2017 recognised with a fifth Ballon d'Or award of his career going his way.

The top gong puts the former Manchester United star level with Barcelona and Argentina ace Messi, who's finished second in France Football's standings this year.

Messi's former Barcelona team-mate Neymar, who joined Paris Saint-Germain in a world-record deal over the summer, has had to settle for third place.

Juventus and Italy veteran Gianluigi Buffon has been voted into fourth, with Ronaldo's Real team-mate Luka Modric rounding off the top five.

The margin of Ronaldo's victory over Messi and Neymar has not yet been disclosed.

Last year the 32-year-old collected 745 votes in comparison to Messi's 316.
